Head injury, minor.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence defines a head injury as any trauma to the head other than shallow injuries on the surface of the face.

For most people, a head injury is usually minor and will not result in any permanent damage. The symptoms are usually mild and short lived.

A minor head injury may cause:

a bump or bruise on the head

nausea (feeling sick)

dizziness

Glasgow Coma Scale

Head injuries are usually assessed by healthcare professionals by using the Glasgow Coma Scale. This is a scale ranged from 3 to 15 that healthcare professionals use to identify the seriousness of a head injury and how severely the brain has been damaged.

A score of 15 means that there is likely to be little or no damage to the brain. A score lower than 15 means that there may be some degree of damage. The lowest possible score is 3, which means that someone is unconscious and cannot respond at all.

According to the GCS, a head injury is minor if the score is 13, 14 or 15. Even a minor head injury will require treatment in hospital.

If there is any change to a person’s level of consciousness, for example if they seem confused or cannot remember the accident, this should be treated as a severe head injury. For more information, see Severe head injury.

How common are head injuries?

Each year in England and Wales, around 700000 people will go to accident and emergency (A&E) departments with a head injury. Of these, 90% have only a minor head injury.

The usual causes of head injuries are falls, assaults and road traffic accidents. In the UK, 40-50% of people with head injuries are children. Children may be more likely to have a minor head injury because they have high energy levels and little sense of danger.

Outlook

Minor head injures should not require treatment. However, a person with a head injury should be monitored for at least 48 hours to check for any changes in their condition.

Serious complications from a minor head injury are rare. One study of 200,000 children in England found that only 14 with minor head injuries required neurosurgery (surgery on the bran, spinal cord or nerves).

Some other possible complications will include long-term headaches, memory loss or difficulty concentrating. One large study that was carried out in the UK found that approximately one in seven people may still experience these symptoms six weeks after a minor head injury.

The rate of death after a head injury is 0.2%. This is to say that out of 1000 people who are admitted to an emergency department at a hospital with a head injury, only two of them may die. However, most of these deaths are among people with a moderate or severe head injury, rather than a minor head injury.

The human brain is a very complex and mysterious organ.
Damage to the brain, known as a traumatic brain injury or TBI,
can affect it in an infinite number of ways, many of which are
not fully understood by neurologists, let alone attorneys,
insurance claims adjusters, and disability examiners. This
often leads to victims not receiving compensatory benefits for
head injury.

The brain is the control system not only for the entire
human body, but the mind as well. Different areas of the brain
control certain aspects of how we think and react to the world
around us. Certain parts of the brain control hearing, vision,
speech, logic, inhibition, personality, and many other aspects
of how we work. Serious damage can occur when something hits a
person in the head, and this can have varying affects depending
on which part of the brain is impacted. The brain is such a
sensitive organ that a person can suffer serious brain damage
even without being knocked unconscious by the injury. In the
case of Phineas Gage (1823-1860), a metal pipe entered his
frontal lobe through the skull and caused him to suffer major
health problems and personality alterations that dramatically
changed his life, but he was not knocked out by the pipe!

Another thing that we need to keep in mind when considering
victims of head injury is that mild head injury is a very
serious matter. A mild head injury is a physiological
disruption of brain function activity at the state of an
accident. It includes unconsciousness, confusion, dizziness,
blurred vision or nausea and these are potential symptoms of a
brain injury that can worsen over time. Mild brain injury is
considered a serious injury according to the American Congress
of Rehabilitation Medicine and should be treated as such.

Injury to the brain does not have to be caused by an object
hitting a person in the head. Other common causes of head
injury can occur with whiplash. When a person’s head is whipped
back and forth violently, the brain may be banged against rough
ridges inside the skull, causing it to be bruised or torn and
even though it is a trauma from the inside, it is still
considered a head injury. Sometimes this happens in babies when
they suffer shaken baby syndrome. Babies systems are so fragile
that this sort of damage can cause severe lifelong disability
that may not be detectable without monitoring the child’s
development over an extended period.

One of the worst things that can happen to you is to get
brain injury. You can never tell up to what extent the damage
to your brain is when you get it.

The doctors will be able to determine how grave the injury
is but to the extent as to the “damage” that it will cause you
is can never really be determined. Some may experience trauma
to the head at it may heal at that time but after may cause
alzheimer’s disease in the future.

So if you can possibly avoid causing injury to your head, do
it. Now how does one get one’s brain injured? Our brain is
enclosed and protected by a tough covering called the skull. So
we should avoid all times to be involved in a trucking
accident. Most of the road accidents are caused by trucks and
it has been found out that there is an increase in bus drivers
who are in violation of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Regulations. Another leading cause of brain injury is factory
defects of products. Another is the consumption of alcohol,
slip and fall and work place injuries.

If you are in any way a victim as to how you got your brain
injuries, there are always people who will help you out with
your cause. Talk to a lawyer and see how he will be able to
help you out.

A brain injury lawyer is always available for consultation
and litigation services for people who have received traumatic
brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury is devastating. Brain injury will
affect who we are, how we act and how we feel. It could be
caused by an accident or it can be caused by an intentional
blow. Either way, it can be truly overwhelming and not to
mention upsetting for both the victim and the family. The truth
is victims of brain injury and their respective families are
not given enough information about it. The extent of damage and
recovery issues cannot be determined at the time of the
accident. The traumatic blow to the head can yield different
consequences at different times. This is the reason why people
who have been victimized by a severe blow to the head must have
a brain injury lawyer.

Brain injury happens when an external force impacts the head
hard enough to break the skull which can directly hurt the
brain. It can happen from vehicular accidents, falls, playing
sports and physical violence. When there is brain injury, the
neurons are affected. There will be difficulty in transmitting
communication from the brain to the different parts of the
body. This will affect how we feel, think and act. That is only
the start, as it can also affect our blood pressure, body
temperature, bowel movements and others. The effects could be
temporary or permanent.

Victims and relatives should know that there is a brain
injury lawyer that they can contact for help. This is important
if they want to pursue with the litigation. It is only right
that the person or entity that has caused this much damage to
the person should be able to pay for it.

According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Association,
there are approximately anywhere from 250,000 to 4000,000
Americans living with some type of spinal cord injury and about
30 people in this country sustain an injury to the spinal cord
every day. Over half of the victims are young men under the age
of 30.

Spinal cord injuries do have a prolific impact on a person’s
life but one can still go on living a fulfilling life after a
spinal cord injury and many people do.

In recovering quality of life after a spinal cord injury, it
is essential to actively gather as many resources as possible
as soon as possible. Medical personnel are often able to
connect patients with organizations and equipment like
motorized wheelchairs, hand levers and ramps for automobiles,
adaptive computer equipment, etc. that can help disabled people
to resume many acts of their daily life. One of the most
important connections a newly disabled person can make is with
a peer network. For those with spinal cord related
disabilities, the National Spinal Cord Injury Association
offers a resource center that can point you in the right
direction and provide you with valuable advocacy. Most of the
people who run the National Spinal Cord Injury Association are
survivors of spinal cord injuries themselves.

Certain governmental agencies are also available to help
people with spinal cord injuries resume a high quality of life.
SSI, SSDI, Medicare and Medicaid are available to help with
medical costs and living expenses on a case by case basis.
Vocational rehabilition can provide help in returning to work
and attaining rehabilitation training and equipment so that one
may again become productive. There are some subsidized housing
projects that exist under H.U.D. with apartment buildings that
are wheelchair accessible.

A good resource for finding out how the government can help
you maintain a high quality of life can be found at:

http://www.naric.com/naric – The web page of the National
Spinal Cord Asociation

http://www.empowermentzone.com/ – is an invaluable
collection of resources that should be looked into by anyone

A box might fall on your head, you might get in an accident
with a company vehicle, or any number of things might happen
causing you head trauma. Spinal cord injury lawyers aren’t
limited to workplace accidents however. Often people get in
motor vehicle accidents or get injured somewhere they assumed
was perfectly safe. A head injury that leads to a traumatic
brain injury can be very hard on the individual and their
families and can also be extremely expensive.

There are many different types of head injury someone can
sustain. There are closed head injuries and penetrating head
injuries. Closed head injuries are when the head is hit
forcefully and depending on the strength of the impact, can
cause a concussion, coma, or death. Closed head injuries put
more focus on determining whether or not the brain was bruised,
scraped, or otherwise injured when the impact took place. A
good example of a closed head injury is an auto accident.
Often, the brain can be pushed forward against the skull as you
decelerate then bounced into the back of the skull. This can be
incredibly damaging. Penetrating head injuries are when
something actually goes through the skull and into the brain
itself. This can be very damaging and effect many different
areas of the brain depending on what exactly penetrated the
skull. A good example of this would be a gunshot to the
head.

A head injury attorney specializes in dealing with head and
spinal cord injury cases. They will find out exactly who, if
anyone, is responsible for your injury and make sure you get
the best possible settlement and care. Many companies are
insured and you may not need a lawyer at all but it is still
recommended to at least consult one. Injuries that occur on
private land or in a public place like a park would be very
difficult for anyone but an attorney to investigate. Before you
hire a head injury lawyer, have him tell you about any previous
brain injury litigation you have been involved in and what the
outcome was. Also check all of his references and make sure he
isn’t going to take a large portion of your settlement that
could be used for medical and family purposes.

There are many different places to find a good head injury
lawyer. The internet is a great place to research different
lawyers and make sure they are legitimate. You can also consult
a paralegal of that lawyer or law firm and ask them questions
about the lawyer. You want to make sure injuries to the brain
and head are the lawyer’s preferred case types or only case
type as they are much more familiar with head injury law than a
general lawyer would be.

There are many different types of brain injury a person can
sustain. The most common form of brain injury or brain trauma
is known as traumatic brain injury or TBI. This occurs when a
sudden trauma from a head injury results in brain damage.

This can occur either from closed head injuries like a blow
to the head, or a penetrating head injury where something ends
up through the skull and into the brain. These injuries can
damage one or more parts of the brain and as a result can leave
people dead, disabled, or in lucky cases, nothing at all. The
symptoms shown when the brain is injured can be very hard to
determine in mild cases, with severe retardation present in
more severe cases.

The damage from head injuries can either be diffuse, which
effects more than one area of the brain, or focal, which
effects just one area of the brain. Diffuse trauma can be
caused by a coma, severe fall, or head injuries such as a
concussion. A concussion shakes the brain inside the skull and
has the potential to do a lot of damage in different areas.
Focal trauma can be caused by things like a nasty fall onto a
sharp rock, an automobile crash where an object penetrates the
skull but doesn’t go very deep, and similar localized traumas.
Many times, if the skull isn’t fractured or penetrated, a
severe trauma can cause a cerebral contusion also known as
bruising of the brain. Bleeding of the brain, or around the
brain, can be caused by both focal and diffuse injuries.

Nature’s helmet is the skull but unfortunately, the skull
isn’t that resistant to the abuse sustained by people today as
it was millions of years ago. We travel at very high speeds and
engage in all types of activities that most animals do not. The
skull is very effective against animal bites, short falls, and
small objects hitting it. A great example of where the skull
began to fail was when man decided to throw rocks at each
other. The skull didn’t evolve to repel rocks so they were an
effective early weapon of war. If someone sustains an injury
from a hurled rock, it could lead to a skull fracture. A skull
fracture occurs when a bone or number of bones in the skull
cracks or breaks. This in turn can cause a contusion of the
brain and lead to concussion, coma, disability, or death.

Some other common forms of brain injury can result from
decrease or lack of oxygen to the brain, inadequate blood
supply, or stroke. There are also blood clots, infection,
viruses and bacteria, and many other injuries that a brain can
be injured by. Over 600,000 people are hospitalized with a head
injury every year in the USA alone. Luckily, with the advance
of technology and the implementation of helmet programs and air
bags, brain injuries have reduced over the years. This is
especially true with bike riding children.

Brain Injury happens when a traumatic blow is received on
the head.

It is so strong that the brain receives a certain degree of
trauma. Thus, aside from the brain, the scalp and the skull are
also injured.

Sadly, there is a certain degree by which we can prevent
brain injury from happening to us and to our children. But
there are times when we are reckless enough to do away with
certain precautions. This would seem like we have placed our
own selves in harm’s way. Do you know that brain injury is the
leading cause of death and disability all over the world? It
can be caused by a fall and the individual has landed on his
head. The head is not protected by any protective gear. It can
also be caused by a vehicular accident and violence. That is
why people have been reiterating the use of seat belts, helmets
either for sports or for motorcycles. There are also warning
signs and programs designed to minimize accidents from
happening.

The degree by which the brain is injured and the effects of
the injury is hard to determine. Some people who are lucky
enough to survive maybe affected in some other way. There could
be physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral effects. Some
have recovered from it while there are others who have not.
That is why when about to participate in activities that will
cause you injury, do wear the prescribed protective gear
designed to protect not only your head but the rest of your
body.

Head injury in children is a very common and unfortunate
occurrence. Each year, over 100,000 children are hospitalized
due to some type of head trauma.

This can come from sports, automobile accidents, bicycle
accidents, falls, and child abuse among many other ways.
Children like to play and enjoy doing things that might be
dangerous but are fun. There is no easy solution to this
problem as nobody can keep an eye on their children all the
time and children can’t abide by every rule put in place by
their parents.

Head injuries come in many different forms. There can be
simple scrapes and cuts, skull fractures that may or may not
recess into the brain area, blunt trauma, and contusions, or
bruises, of the brain. These are nearly impossible to identify
on your own so you will have to go to the hospital and get a
professional neuropsychologist’s opinion followed by X-rays, CT
scans, and many other tests. The best witness is the child
themselves or anyone who saw what caused the injury, so any
information they can give you will help.

The difficulty with brain injuries in children comes in
diagnosing the effects the injury may have caused. Children are
still developing many parts of their brains so there is a
waiting game involved. If a very young child falls and sustains
an injury nobody can tell if their speech, social, or reading
and writing areas of the brain may have been damaged. They will
have to wait until they reach the appropriate ages for these
activities and judge it from there. It can be hard to determine
IQ in small children as well.

Children love dangerous activities such as riding their
bikes off jumps, attempting skateboard tricks they see on
television, sledding down unsafe hills, and many other
activities. Professionals on television always wear the proper
pads and helmets so you can encourage your children to follow
the example of whoever they are wanting to imitate.

There are many preventative steps you can take to help your
children avoid head injuries. You can encourage family bike
rides where everyone wears helmets. This is very effective in
young children who won’t feel embarrassed by riding around with
their family and wearing a helmet. It can be much harder to
talk an older child into a helmet. With some encouragement and
maybe by letting them pick out or decorate their helmet you can
get better results. Always have your children wear seat belts,
both shoulder and lap if available. There is no way to prevent
your child from falling down. Whether accidental or on purpose,
children fall very often. Encourage them to play in grassy
areas as opposed to concrete or asphalt areas since grass and
dirt is much softer than concrete or asphalt.
