What Are The Causes Of Brain Injury

September 15th, 2008

It is alarming to think that the leading cause of deaths in
America below the age of 45 is brain injury. Now how do they
get brain injury?

It i caused mostly by vehicular accidents, falls and it
happens during sports where players get head injuries.

There are actually different types of head injuries which
can lead to brain injuries. One is direct trauma. This is when
the brain collides with the inside of the hard skull. The skull
is not fractured in any way but it can cause a contusion to the
brain and hemorrhage. This happens during a vehicular accident
when the head strikes the steering wheel. Second is indirect
trauma. The perfect example of this is Shaken Baby Syndrome
where severe shaking can cause damages to the nerve cells. It
can cause injury or death. Third is diffuse axonal injury. This
just means that there is severe sudden twisting to the brain.
It usually occurs because of whiplash. The fourth type of head
injury is toxic substance exposure. This is when the person is
exposed to toxic chemicals such as lead, toluene, carbon
monoxide and others.

This just goes to show us how we can get brain injury. So we
should take extra precaution each and every time we go out. We
should drive safely, never drink and drive. Wear the required
head gear whenever we do sports and others.
